504 Plans

Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability. Section 504 is an anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met.

A 504 Plan can help students with disabilities learn and participate in the general education curriculum. A 504 plan outlines how a child’s specific needs are met with accommodations in the school setting.

A 504 plan is developed by a team of people who are familiar with the student and who understand the evaluation data and special services options.  Each building has designated 504 Coordinators who will meet annually with teachers, student (when appropriate), and parents to evaluate and develop the 504 plan.
